Children and Teen Counseling
Family and parenting counseling is something that many seek after deciding to have kids as many individuals find themselves in need of support. Whether it is the process of trying to have kids and potential fertility issues, pressures of trying to be a perfect parent, or building a new identity as a parent, we are here to help. We have expertly-trained family counselors and family psychologists available. We also offer support for relationship counseling, child counseling, and teen counseling, if needed.
When is counseling needed?
Many children and teens have problems that affect how they feel, act, or learn. Therapy is a type of treatment for these problems. It is a way to get help for your child.
In therapy, kids talk and learn how to work out their problems. Going to therapy helps them cope better, communicate better, and do better.
What does family and parenting counseling consist of?
When children have emotional or behavioral problems, the earlier they get treatment, the easier it is to help them. But as parents, you also want to avoid unnecessary treatment and costs in both time and money. When you’re concerned about a child’s mental health, you might be told by family members, friends and maybe even your pediatrician to relax and wait—she’ll grow out of it. Sometimes this is good advice. Sometimes it’s not.
There are times when it’s clearly not a good idea to wait to get your child help for mental health issues. For instance:
- Eating disorders
- Family history
- Cutting
The benefits of children and teen counseling
Children, just like adults, can participate and benefit from counseling. Counseling helps children and adolescents learn how to identify causes of their distress, improve skills in asking for help and expressing emotions, and increase problem-solving abilities.
Our approach to child/adolescent counseling is holistic and strength-based. We understand each child/teen is unique. Therefore, we seek to identify and further develop individual strength and growth areas, while reducing distress and increasing coping skills.
